It takes a lot of hard work to craft and build a number one domain name. Number 1 in Google, Yahoo, Bing and the rest that is. I’m pretty sure it starts with a good domain name. We’re not going to discuss the semantics of hyphens, .net versus .coms, or anything like that. Just a few simple rules for making your domain #1 and keeping it that way. Feel free to add to this list! Everybody needs constructive criticism, and tips they might have forgotten to include, it’s not like this list is written in stone…

By the way, I have created and sold several #1 domains, including, Freight Bill Post Audit #1 in Google, Bing, and Yahoo, for over six years.

Madman’s RULES

Key a Keyword-rich domain name from a fully accredited domain name registrar.

Build a standards compliant XHTML site, or use a XHTML content management system. (CMS)

Mae simple navigation links, and make you site simple to navigate. (although this rule must be bent on certain occasions)

Make sure your website validates with the W3C webpage validation service.

Keep your webpages lightweight, scripts, images, and all, make sure all that stuff is optimized!

Give your website time to catch on, because Rome wasn’t built in a day, and Google has a SandBox effect. (In other words… the longer a domain has been online with some content, the better it will be evaluated and trusted by Google and other search engines)

For Goodness sakes, make sure there are not any misspellings, amazingly tough to do in the age of spell check. It’s one reason why I code a lot of sites by hand.

If you aren’t going to be using a CMS, don’t use a WYSIWYG editor. Most of these add crappy code, and make your source code hard to read. Of course it HAS BEEN A WHILE since I tested any of those softwares, so thing might have changed, but I highly recommend you learn to code standards compliant XHTML if you are seriously wanting a #1 website.

Make sure you use keywords in image alt text and link title attribute text

Include complete contact information.

Include a complete privacy policy.

Include a Google Map to your location (Not really necessary, but a great touch, and super easy)

If possible create or use a creation service for an XML site Map.

Make sure you have an HTML site page reachable from your first page.

Style with ease (Make your visual appeal pop by making it easy on the eyes, grays, blues, silver, cream, some red)

Make sure you content isn’t repeated over and over, write unique content for every page, and make sure it’s legible complete and easily understandable. (Not often easy to do!)

Link Build, Link Build, Link Build, Link Build, Link Build, Link Build… Need I say more?

Of course there’s a couple little goodies that I’m not telling you as they are Internet Madman proprietary secrets. Needless to say the rules above should get you there. I can’t give away my total sum of knowledge, because it can only be duplicated if you are building a site from scratch anyway.

It’s a totally exciting thing that the W3C & CSS3 offers web designers a new choice for making those beautiful rounded corners in a straightforward and easy manner.

Introducing: -moz-border-radius & -webkit-border-radius.

You need both to make all compatible browsers show the rounded border of CSS objects. Works on block elements, even fields. What a way to customize your form fields.

You can even adjust individual corners like so:

-moz-border-radius-topleft | -webkit-border-top-left-radius
-moz-border-radius-topright | -webkit-border-top-right-radius
-moz-border-radius-bottomleft | -webkit-border-bottom-left-radius
-moz-border-radius-bottomright | -webkit-border-bottom-right-radius

Example #1

This example show a border with 4 pixel radius.

Needless to say this is pretty revolutionary, considering all the old ways of making rounded corners with CSS, JavaScript hacks, CSS hacks, images, etc… What a paint in the rectum. Of course Internet Explorer is still behind the times, and if you are using IE, then you won’t see anything but a boring old rectangle. Do yourself a favor and download FireFox. Intenet Explorer continually lags behind in innovation, and being standards compliant. Do they even have an integrated form field spell checker yet? I don’t really know cause I only use IE do make sure the design looks right in it. Alas this feature looks to be far in the future for IE.

Here’s an excerpt that leads me to realize this,

“Internet Explorer and the border-radius Properties

While the W3C has specified the border-radius properties in its latest CSS3 working draft, Microsoft has not implemented the border-radius properties in Internet Explorer 8.

Microsoft is committed to providing a browser that accurately supports Web standards. In Internet Explorer 8, we shipped several features from HTML5 and CSS3. Our primary goal was implementing CSS 2.1 (a specification that has reached final candidate stage) completely and correctly before moving on to specifications that are still in development and may change.” – From the Microsoft website.

Link to this post!
